In October 2025, while a storm was forming over the Caribbean Sea, traditional meteorological models were unable to determine its exact path. While uncertainty persisted between the storm weakening or intensifying toward Jamaica, the WeatherNext AI model, developed by Google DeepMind and Google Research, predicted with 80% certainty that the system would hit Jamaica with the intensity of a Category 5 hurricane.
Although Hurricane Melissa caused widespread damage, WeatherNext's early prediction five days before the disaster gave authorities the opportunity to prepare local communities for floods and landslides. This model has managed to push the boundaries of accuracy in weather forecasting.
Research results recently published in the journal Nature show that WeatherNext predicts cyclones with accuracy beyond all existing models. On average, the system issues warnings 24 hours earlier than current models; this means its three-day forecast is as accurate as the two-day forecasts of present models. This extra day in rescue and relief operations can save thousands of lives.
