Only one month after the US Department of Defense announced that nearly half of its 3.5 million employees use artificial intelligence at work, members of the Army’s Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) received an email warning of excessive AI token usage and urging them to limit their consumption.
The email stated that although the Army’s Chief Information Officer had announced unlimited token availability in May 2026, by mid-June the token reserve had been fully depleted and restrictions were reimposed. The US Army uses the Ask Sage multimedia platform to run large language models such as Google’s Gemini, Meta’s Llama, and OpenAI’s ChatGPT. According to an anonymous army employee, the army consumed all its annual tokens using only one service, and it is unclear whether the token reserves will be renewed after October 1.
