Meta's alleged use of artificial intelligence to dismiss disabled and leave-taking employees

Meta has faced a legal complaint for using artificial intelligence in decision-making to lay off 8,000 of its employees. According to the plaintiffs, the company targeted disabled employees and those who had taken medical or family leave. The case has been filed by 26 employees in the California state court.

The plaintiffs claim that Meta's layoff list was created using internal AI tools, such as "Metamate," internal AI assistants, data obtained from keystroke monitoring, dashboards tracking AI token usage, and employee performance rankings. These systems ranked employees based on their usage of Meta's AI tools.

According to the data presented in the complaint, Meta categorized employees with terms like "AI native," "AI first," and "AI active." The plaintiffs believe that the layoff process was unfair and not conducted in a humane manner.
