37 percent increase in Google's electricity consumption in 2025 due to the expansion of artificial intelligence data centers

Google announced that its annual electricity consumption in 2025 increased by 37% compared to the previous year; the highest growth rate in electricity consumption in the company's history, due to the expansion of data centers and artificial intelligence infrastructure in Silicon Valley. However, Google emphasizes that by purchasing a large volume of renewable energy, it has been able to keep its operational carbon emissions at a low level.

According to Google's latest sustainability report, the company's total electricity consumption has increased by more than 250% since 2019. This significant increase is attributed to the continuous growth of Google's cloud services, YouTube video streaming, and the construction and operation of data centers to support artificial intelligence products and services. The trend of increasing electricity consumption for Google in 2024 was 27%, and this 37% growth in 2025 indicates an acceleration of this trend.

The sustainability report states: "Our path to achieving climate goals will not be linear; because the development of our AI infrastructure continues to outpace the rate of carbon reduction in power grids. Nevertheless, we remain focused on increasing the use of abundant and affordable clean energy worldwide and advancing technological innovations that help reduce carbon emissions in our operations and the broader industry."
