Leading AI labs in the United States, including OpenAI and Anthropic, have launched cheaper models into the market to retain customers seeking to reduce costs. This move is a direct reaction to the advances of Chinese developers who are targeting market share by offering cost-effective alternatives.
The price war is escalating as increasing infrastructure costs have forced companies to look for cheaper models. In the meantime, Chinese startups such as Moonshot and DeepSeek have successfully managed to attract users' attention in global markets, from Silicon Valley to Europe.
In the latest developments, OpenAI has reduced the price of its GPT-5.6 Luna model by up to 80 percent. Simultaneously, Anthropic has introduced the Claude Opus 5 model, claiming to offer advanced intelligence at half the cost of previous models, to remain in this intense competition for attracting price-sensitive customers.
