Meta's Pocket app: AI brings game ideas to life, but control remains with the platform

The emergence of AI-powered coding tools and the concept of “vibe coding” has transformed software development cycles. Although these tools had previously been available to novice developers eager to learn, the use of command-line interfaces (CLIs), integrated development environments (IDEs), and terminal configurations could still present significant barriers for individuals without technical backgrounds. With the launch of its new project, Pocket, Meta is attempting to make AI-driven coding as accessible to any audience as posting on social media.

Pocket, a mobile application that launched in the United States on August 21, is the product of Meta acquiring the team behind the former Gizmo app and the subsequent integration of Snapchat engineers into Meta’s Superintelligence Lab. The app allows users to create interactive items or fully functional “gizmos” simply by typing text prompts, without the need to view even a single line of code. These creations can be shared with other users in an endless feed featuring likes, comments, and reshares, similar to TikTok.

Based on user feedback, using Pocket is an engaging experience that enables rapid prototyping of games generated through conversations with large language models (LLMs). However, the main challenge is that all this AI effort and its resulting creations are confined within Meta’s new “walled garden.” Currently, there is no practical way to extract, enhance, or convert these interactive games into standalone products outside of Meta’s ecosystem.
