The European Commission announced in its latest vote that OpenAI's ChatGPT, the social platform Reddit, and the gaming platform Roblox will henceforth be designated as Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs) under the European Union's Digital Services Act (DSA). This decision reflects the efforts of Berlin and Brussels to adapt legacy digital regulations to the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence.
Consequently, these services will be subject to stricter oversight and are required to fulfill additional obligations, including the removal of illegal content and the protection of the privacy and safety of minor users (under 18). Companies in breach of these regulations may face fines of up to 6% of their total global annual turnover; a situation that could pave the way for global standards in AI regulation.
