In a controversial incident, a member of the Canadian Parliament inadvertently read out content generation instructions produced by a language model AI (LLM) during an official speech in parliament. Bill Oliver, a Progressive Conservative MP in the New Brunswick legislature, included a sentence in his speech that clearly reflected part of an AI language model's suggested output.
During his speech, Oliver said, “Here is a smoother and more natural version of that section, which reads more like a legislative speech than a series of short points.” This sentence clearly indicated an automated response from a language model, which often suggests alternative phrasings to users. At the time, the incident did not attract much attention, but after the video was posted to social media platforms like Reddit and Threads, it became controversial and has since sparked widespread discussion in Canada’s national media.
Ultimately, the incident triggered a wave of commentary about the use of AI tools in politics, with some outlets like the Toronto Star describing it as a sign of declining performance among political leaders who are relying more on technology than their own abilities.
