AI proctoring disaster in Mexico's university entrance exam; 58,000 students must retake the exam

Earlier this summer, nearly 160,000 applicants took the entrance exam for UNAM, Mexico's largest educational institution. This was the first time the exam was held completely remotely, utilizing lockdown browsers and AI-based proctoring software; however, this experience turned into a major failure.

An analysis of the final results showed that this year's scores bore no resemblance to the patterns of previous years. While between 2021 and 2025, an average of only 3.5% of candidates managed to score 100 or higher on the 120-question exam, this year that figure unreasonably surged to 16.3%. This strange statistical jump has led experts to point to a serious flaw in the smart proctoring system and the likelihood of widespread cheating.
