The proposed legislative plan called "AI Kill Switch Act" grants U.S. government officials the ability to stop or disable AI systems capable of causing serious harm. This plan is designed to prevent potential threats originating from artificial intelligence.
If approved, the law would give the current and future U.S. administrations the authority to block user access to AI systems or disable specific features when necessary. AI system developers would also be required to implement the technical capabilities for these restrictions in their products.
According to the proposal, the Secretary of Homeland Security can order the suspension or shutdown of an AI system. Companies that violate this law may face daily fines of up to $20 million. The plan specifically focuses on national security and mitigating risks associated with AI technologies.
